A 57-year-old man from the village of Erimi was remanded for eight days in Limassol on Wednesday following the alleged discovery of 17kg of cannabis in his car and home on Tuesday evening.

“At around 8.15pm Limassol drug squad stopped and searched a 57-year-old man in his car where they found three packages containing three kilos of cannabis,” said Stelios Sergides, head of the drug squad,at a news conference to announce the bust at police headquarters in Nicosia on Wednesday.

The man was arrested after a further probe at his residence uncovered another 14 packages containing in total 14kg of the drug, police said.

They said the man confessed to bringing a larger amount of the drug to Cyprus in May and that they were investigating a case of importation and possession with intent to supply.

“We have two prices, wholesale and retail,” said Segides when asked about the value of the find. “A kilo of cannabis costs between six and eight thousand euros, while a gram retails at between ten and fifteen euros.”
