ΛΕΜΕΣΟΣ – ΛΗΣΤΕΙΑ ΥΠΑΛΛΗΛΟΥ ΕΤΑΙΡΕΙΑΣ

Two hooded men armed with a pistol and a hammer, raided a cash collection van in Limassol and stole thousands of euros, police said.

The robbery took place just after 2pm when the employee of the prepaid telephony company returned to his home in Polemidhia with the cash collected from convenience stores stashed in a safe at the back of van.

Two individuals in ski masks got out of a car that was following and threatened the man with a pistol and hammer. A third individual remained in the driver’s seat.

The robbers demanded the keys to the safe but the employee refused, prompting a beating over the head.

The man gave up the keys, which the robbers used to open the safe, snatch an unknown amount of money, and fled in the waiting car.

It was found five kilometres north of the scene and police determined that it had been reported stolen.

The employee, who was treated in hospital, told officers that the perpetrators spoke broken Greek.

Limassol CID chief Ioannis Soteriades could not immediately say how much money had been stolen but it was tens of thousands of euros.

Soteriades stressed that the method used by the company to transport its money was wrong. He urged companies to use special vehicles and take all necessary security measures, including never travelling alone.
