Prominent lawyer and former European Court of Human Rights judge Loukis Loucaides has been charged for abusing a police officer and traffic violations, it emerged on Friday.

The incident happened on Nikis Avenue in Nicosia at 11.50am on Thursday. For reasons that were not immediately known, Loucaides, 78, started shouting and verbally abusing a police officer who was carrying out traffic checks at the time.

Loucaides, who was not wearing a seatbelt, had also parked illegally on a double yellow line.

He then proceeded to swear at the police officer who, with the help of colleagues, arrested the former judge and hauled him to Lykavitos police station at around 12.30pm.

Loucaides reacted to his arrest and once more verbally assaulted a police officer.

He was eventually charged in writing for abusing the officers and various traffic violations.
